Program: THAT'S WHY WE CALL 'EM SHEPHERDS
We know this breed is versatile but do you know where all those wonderful abilities come from? Their herding ancestors. Most of today's German Shepherds still display the instincts that made them so valuable to their sheep herding owners.
The Breed Information page gives you a quick overview of the breed's background. Nancy Ward, of Brigand's Hideout, a herding facility in Battleground, WA, will give you a much more in depth introduction to the AKC's version of this style of herding. Take it from Gordy, there is nothing like spending a day working a flock of sheep. Even today at 11 years, a trip to Brigand's and a chance to work is the best present this retired dog can get.
Nancy is a licensed AKC herding judge who is very experienced with tending breeds, including German Shepherds. For more information about herding, herding lessons, herding practice, and herding trials, contact Nancy at brigandshideout.com.
