The Oregon Tail

 Winter 2007

Better late than never ...

It was scheduled for December 14th, but Mother Nature had other ideas ...

The restaurant was ready, the gifts were bought, people were heading for the Christmas Party when ODOT announced that due to the storm, they suggest everyone stay off the roads as the storm was blowing in hard and wet. A phone tree was started and people were notified the party was off. Paula was wondering if she was going to be blown off the I-205 bridge. Carol Y had just made it through the gorge and was happy to be off the highway. Ruth was at Terry's and heard tree branches falling all around. Then the power went off. Days later, when people slowly got power back, downed trees were removed, and highways re-opened we found out that a tree had fallen across the restaurant parking lot - right where many of us normally park. Other than some structural damage, everyone made it through the storm just fine.

So things were rescheduled and the Christmas Party became a New Year's pot luck at our regular club meeting in January. Gifts were exchanged, stories were told and a good time was had by all.

A special portion of the evening was the presentation of the club awards. What a wonderful way to celebrate everyone's successes!

Bob Penny

Bob Penny was a great friend of the German Shepherd Dog and of this club. He officiated at many temperament tests for us and shared his stories and movies on more than one occasion. Always kind and positive, Bob was what we all hope to be and rarely achieve. Bob was looking forward to coming up for our next temperament test as he loved coming to visit with us.

Bob died this past fall. We have lost a wonderful friend and a the breed has lost a real spokesman and supporter of the true German Shepherd Dog.

Club Awards

This year marked the first year for the presentation of award pins for titles and recognition earned through the year. AKC titles, Temperament certificates, ROM, Regional Futurity awards and other AKC/GSDCA/GSDCO special recognitions. This year we awarded a total of 106 pins and 49 zipper pulls.

This included the GSDCO pin specially designed for us

If you did not earn one this year, get out there and you and your dog can join in the fun. The awards are available as either pins or zipper pulls - which also look fabulous on the front of the dog's crate. Just ask Patty or Chris P or Donna.

Eukanuba National

Award of Merit

Ch VonHamm Bedkar Leather N' Lace adds to her record.

It was a long trip to Long Beach, CA for the AKC-Eukanuba Invitational, but Kay Reamensnyder and handler Jullie Hamasaki were happy to make it. "Stevie" ended the year as #2 German Shepherd in the country and going to Long Beach to compete against the top dogs in the country was the perfect end to the year.

Stevie was awarded First Award of Merit in this nationally telecast event, where the only bitch to beat her went on to win the highly competitive Herding Group. Not bad for a very young bitch just learning the show game.

The other half of Team Stevie, Randy and Lisa Hamm, stayed home with Stevie's very pregnant sister "Mine", who was bred to Select Excellent, AOE Ch Lenlor's Maximus CD, to continue the next generation of Von Hamm-Bedkar show dogs.
